Talk-A-Bots - Convert-A-Bots

Unreleased Radio or Walkie Talkie Robots

There weren't too many Western, mainstream, mode changing robot toy lines that didn't include a robot radio or a set of walkie talkies and Convert-A-Bots would have been no exception.

Featured on the back of Fight-R-Bot's box is an artist interpretation of what an upcoming radio or walkie talkie Convert-A-Bot could have looked like.

Radio or walkie talkies? The name Talk-A-Bots is printed as a plural and while 'talk' could mean any sound coming from a radio, it's more than likely it was a pair of two robots that change into a set of walkie talkies.

If the illustration is indicative of the planned toy, most likely the arms fold behind, its head pushes in, legs rotate 90 degrees outward from the front then fold up along the robot's sides.

What's interesting is that as Village Toys acquired many of the models for Convert-A-Bots from other sources, no previously released toy seems to match this design*. It could well be this was to be a unique item for Convert-A-Bots that didn't make it to production.

The closest example that went to production is the set of Walkie Talkies by Playtime distributed under license for Tonka's Gobots line. While there are certainly similarities, if this was the same product vs. the illustration, significant cost reduction in the legs and overall design was made before it was released for sale. The same model was released in Mexico and Argentina (likely other South American countries) by Ensueño; see example below.
